The battle of the best dry German Riesling

The snow had suddenly presented itself for the first time this morning, and it was cold and wet outside. People were wondering effortlessly around trying to fight of the blizzard and blistering cold with their umbrellas. Me however had been so fortunate as to get an invitation from Wines of Germany. They wanted me to participate in a small tasting panel together with 8 other professional wine tasters, with the noble task of selecting the 12 best German Riesling Trocken wines in the Premium price category. With such a high level of overall quality, this would be no easy task.

A fierce competition, but who will prevail in the end...?

IMG_4499.jpg

The tasting was comprised of 44 different wines, where 12 of them would make it into the finals. All the flights were completely blind and the only knowledge we had up front was of which region they came from and that they were in the premium price range above 33 Euros. The regions represented was Rheingau, Nahe, Mosel, Rheinhessen and Pfalz.

In the preliminary tasting we worked our way trough all the 44 wines by grading them with point scores on appearance, smell, taste and overall quality.

The quality level of the wines were impressively high, but after several hours we managed to narrow the list down to 12 top candidates.

In the second round the 12 finalists where graded after the Parker scale and tasting notes were written.

The following tasting notes and point scores are my own and not the total scores from the tasting panel.
