Launois Grand Cru 2010 Blanc de blancs
If one dares to navigate away from the familiar and known in the store shelves and dare to try something new, it is possible to get some great bargains. This is the case with Lanouis 2010 Grand Cru. Firstly the market price is on the same level as simple non vintage Champagnes, but the quality and the development is much higher, making it a worthy adversary against Champagnes of a much higher caliber. It is made from 100% Chardonnay grapes, meaning and from one vintage, meaning it needs development to really shine, and this is certainly the case here.
The history of the Champagne house Launois stretches all the way back to 1872, and is now managed by the eight generation of the family which is the two sisters Severine and Caroline Launois. They are located in the area of Cotes de Blancs where the best examples of the Chardonnay grapes are grown. They own 21 Ha of vineyards where most of them are situated around the city of Mesnil Sur Oger. Most of these are Grand Cru vineyards which are some of the finest in the area.
The vineyards in the area Cotes de Blancs is considered the very best vineyards in Champagne, and Chardonnay is the main grape variety grown here. The Chardonnay grape thrives here with a perfect sun exposure and limestone soil stretching several hundred meters below ground. A perfect soil with the ability to retain water in dry periods and also gives good drainage in periods of high rainfall.
The 2010 Vintage in Champagne was a rather difficult contrasting vintage. The season started with a cold winter, then a cool spring with some nightly frost. When the summer finally started it became very warm, and there was very little rain, resulting in periods of drought in the vineyards. But suddenly in August the sky opened up with large amounts of rainfall in just a few days. The grape that performed best this vintage was definitely the Chardonnay grape.
