Sauvignon Blanc

Grape of the month

Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc is known for it distinct aromas of black currant leafs, nettles and green herbs with amazingly fruit driven aromas and flavours. It should usually be enjoyed as fresh as possible. Sauvignon Blanc is now grown all over the world, but there are two countries that can be credited for the massive popularity this grapes has devloped, each in its own way.

One region in France has defined the Sauvignon Blanc grape, and that region is the Loire Valley. The Loire Valley is situated Northwest of France, stretching all the way from the Atlantic ocean far inland. The Loire Valley is comprised of several sub regions, but the towns of Sancerre and Pouilly Fume located furthest East is well known for producing elegant, fresh and mineral driven wines from the Sauvignon Blanc grape. Most of the wines in the world produced from this grape should be enjoyed as fresh as possible, but there are exceptions, escpecially from Sancerre and Pouilly Fume where some producers create some extraordinary age worthy examples.

New Zealand

Known as the worlds most Southern wine making country in the world, but opposed to France, wine making has just started to gain ground here in more recent years. This is all thanks to the Sauvignon Blanc grape, a grape the entire Kiwi wine industry has been built on. As opposed to the French counterpart with its finesse and mineral driven elegance, Sauvignon Blanc wines from New Zealand packs more of an explosive fruit punch. Often dominated by aromas of Black Currant leafs.
