Wine of the Month

Produttori del Barbaresco 2014

Now that a new season has slowly started to emerge, a new array of aromas is beginning to fill the air. Soon it will be dominated by earthy aromas of decaying leaves and moist soil. The autumn signals the end of summer, but it also signals a new beginning. Enjoying a bottle of Barbaresco from Produttori del Barbaresco is a great way to celebrate the new beginning.

Barbaresco is often referred to as the "Queen of Piemonte" as opposed to the neighbouring Barolo who is referred to as "The King". They are both made with 100% Nebbiolo.

Barbaresco is located in the hills of Langhe right next to the great river Tanaro. In 1958 Produttori del Barbaresco was established here as a cooperative. A cooperative does not grow their own grapes, but they buy them from a selection of local grape growers. Produttori del Barbaresco buys grapes from 53 different growers, totalling about 100 hectares of vineyards. Most of the growers have sold their grapes to Produttori del Barbaresco for several generations, and need to follow strict rules regarding the quality of the grapes they supply. Becoming a member is not easy, and the waiting list is long.

The cooperative has a board comprised of 9 members from the 53 growers. Every 3 years they select a new president from the family of growers. The landscape is divided by several hills and the growers populate different hills producing a waste diversity of different Nebbiolo characters  because of the variation in sun exposure and soil. Together they all contribute to the complexity of the finished wine.

Barbaresco has a beautiful landscape surrounded by hills and fog. Many belive that the name of the grape Nebbiolo comes from the word "Nebbia" meaning fog, just as Piemonte is named by these hills literally meaning "by the foot of the mountain".

Wines from Barbaresco are more elegant and fruit driven in style compared to its tannic and bold counterpart Barolo. But they are still very age worthy and develops a lot of earthy complexity when aged.
